A brand new ticket option for 2015! Groups can now enjoy a fascinating guided tour of Oxford Castle Unlocked, the city’s 1000 year old castle prison, before embarking on a walk with local historian and author Mark J. Davies to discover the historical and literary importance of some less-visited parts of the famous city of dreaming spires.
There are a number of walks to choose from, which vary in distance and time span. All prices shown include a guided tour of Oxford Castle Unlocked.
Choose your walk from the following subjects:
OXFORD CANAL AND MILL STREAM WALK A circular walk with three length options: 1.5 miles (1 hour), 2 miles (90 minutes) or 2.5 miles (2 hours), taking in some of the oldest parts of Oxford, the River Thames and its side streams, including a lock of particular literary and strategic importance.
From £11.95 – £13.95
DEATH MARCH A one hour ‘dead slow walk’ in the vicinity of the Castle on the theme of death: executions; drownings; bungled escapes; dissections; and resurrections. Tales of murderers; highwayman; gamblers; hangman; and bargeman, both real and fictional.
‘ALICE IN WONDERLAND’ WALK A one hour walk following the course of the partly underground Trill Mill Stream from near the Castle to Christ Church Meadow, via a glimpse of Paradise.
WALK ON THE WELSH SIDE A 2 hour walk with reference to ‘sons of Cambria’ such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Gerald of Wales, T.E. Lawrence, an incalculable number of Joneses, and Dylan Thomas. Passing from west to east, from pre-Roman to post-War, from the River Thames to the River Cherwell, from Oxford Castle to Magdalen College, expect tales of ‘rough and adventurous relaxations’, and of red dragons, red herrings and red faces.
